What an RCD, or safety switch, actually does

  • Push-button test, pressing the “test” button to confirm the RCD trips. How often depends on the environment: daily or before use on construction, demolition and manufacturing sites; around every three months in typical offices and shops; and roughly six-monthly for many fixed RCDs.
  • Operating-time test, a meter measures exactly how quickly the RCD trips against the limits in the standard. This is generally done every 12 months.

Because the intervals shift with the type of workplace, it’s worth confirming the exact schedule for your site rather than assuming one figure covers everything. In a home there’s no legal testing interval, but pushing the test button on your safety switches every three months is the widely recommended habit.

What RCD safety switch testing involves

RCD safety switch testing is quick per device but methodical:

  • Locating and identifying each RCD in the switchboard.
  • Pressing the test button to confirm it trips.
  • Using a meter to measure the trip time against the limits in the standard.
  • Recording the result and tagging or logging each device.
  • Flagging any RCD that trips too slowly, or not at all, for repair or replacement.

It’s usually done alongside the test and tag of portable equipment, since both fall under the same standard.

Compliance requirements and standards

AS/NZS 3760 sets the trip-time limits and testing intervals, and results need to be recorded so there is evidence the testing was done. For a business, that record matters: if there is an electrical incident or a WHS audit, being able to show your safety switch testing in Adelaide was kept up to date demonstrates you met your duty of care. A failed or missing RCD that leads to an injury can expose a business to regulator action and complicate insurance; all avoidable with a routine schedule.

Signs your safety switch needs a check sooner

  • Burning smells, buzzing, or scorch marks around the switchboard.
  • No safety switches at all on power and lighting circuits in an older building.
